Marietta Dentist – Dental Sealants
Dental sealants have an important part to play in the preservation of teeth and preventing tooth decay. Your dentist will place a plastic coating into the grooves of the teeth. This will result in a smoother surface preventing food being trapped and the build up of plaque. The results are healthier, cleaner teeth which are easier to clean.
Dental sealant is a bonding plastic resin. Once this sealant is in place, brushing the teeth is More Effective as there will no longer be pits and fissures for food. Plaque is also more easily removed, and this in turn reduces the risk of tooth decay.
Today, dentists are sealing teeth much earlier then before. Young children who are able to co-operate, usually around the age of 6 years of age and whose permanent teeth have broken through the surface of the gums are considered ideal candidates for dental sealants. There is no specific age as to when it is best to apply these sealants. It will vary from one child to another.
Dental sealants are primarily placed on children’s teeth. If you are an adult you can ask your dentist to assess your teeth and decide if you are a candidate for sealants.
Teeth that most commonly have dental sealants applied are the back teeth. These are at most risk of tooth decay due to food being trapped between the teeth.
Which teeth will receive sealants will be determined by your dentist. His or her examination of your teeth will take into account exactly which teeth are at greater risk of dental decay. A decision will be based on which teeth will benefit most from dental sealants.
Depending on the shape of the grooves (fissures and pits), some teeth are at greater risk of cavity formation. Teeth where the grooves are narrow will be more likely in need of dental sealants than teeth that are shallow and rounded.
Other aspects the dentist will consider when deciding which teeth are more at risk are how much decay has already formed, the amount of fluoride exposure and how much plaque is present on the tooth surface.
After the teeth have been cleaned thoroughly, usually with a paste and rotating brush by your dentist, the tooth surface is washed with water then dried. An acidic solution is placed on the fissure area of the tooth and left on for a few seconds before being washed off. This creates a surface that can receive the dental sealant and allow it to effectively adhere to the surface. Once the tooth has dried, the liquid sealant is applied. The sealant is hardened by using light. Once hardened, the surface is ready for use.
The average lifespan of a dental sealant is approximately 4-5 years. Regular check-ups with your dentist will ensure that any changes will be noticed and rectified before they become serious. There can be no doubt that prevention is always better than cure. The use of a dental sealant will prevent your teeth from becoming decayed.
