How do I motivate a commission only sales force?
Our sales force sells advertising for a web-based new publication in a town of a little over 3000 people. How do I get them motivated and out there making money? Our commision rate is 20%. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Zeida, the pace of the pack is determined by the speed of the leader. You have to set the pace even if your a managing director. You have to also serve your workers, give them ideas but go with them and show them how its done. And here’s a few ways of doing it -
1. In your town there will be meetings, where businessess meet, where people of business come together, so have a portfolio ready and go out there and mingle.
People will buy from someone who they like not what you do. So help them to build relationships and get to know the people in town and word of mouth is the best part of getting commission.
2. If you have motivate your sales team then you will either need to sort out the enviroment they are in, within the office with some pet talk which will motivate them. The best way I find is the leader has to be strong, compassionate, buzzing always, and when the office is sparking mad with enthusiasm because of your energy, then the workers will do whatever it takes because they want you to keep smiling but also, they see you’re always encouraging, helping them.
3. When they see your a leader, your putting the action in, setting the example in bringing the sale and sharing the knowledge of “How” then they will get moving/
4. One needs to set goals with all the team. The team come together as one, with one goal and together they go for it, but working together not against each other.
5. You can give as much bonus you want but have you took time to listen to them? Have you sat down to find out what they want from their work? Have you found out their dreams? Have you built a relationship with them so there is mutual respect?
These build a strong foundation of not just respect but also, they look up to the leader and want to do whatever it takes because…you took the time to listen and find out about them.

A sales manager in a firm with a large sales force recently said, “my salespeople give me better information about the market than I could ever get from our market research department”. Discuss.
admin answers:
This would be due to the fact that the sales people talk to the customers directly as opposed to market research which relies on focus groups. They have to answer the actual questions about the product that the customers are asking when they are being sold the product. Focus groups deal with ideals, salespeople deal with actual people.

Helen asks…
what is the scope for a new CRM like sales force, in this recessionary phase?
hi I got a job for sales of a new CRM product like sales force, what do you think would be a good geography to initiate efforts for sales of such products.
admin answers:
One big issue is cost. Sales Force can be prohibitively expensive for companies that are small and attempting to grow, thus opting for a software program like ACT or Goldmine. What are the features and benefits of your product over Sales Force? That will tell you what market to focus on.
Also, when you question “geography” does that mean you don’t have a sales territory? I don’t understand. Get yourself a good database of companies by SIC code and then decide on what market segments have been neglected in your territory.
When the economy is in slow down it a GREAT time to sell a product that makes a company more efficient and gives them a good handle on tracking their sales funnel.

Where can I get REAL cheap sales force?
I’m starting a new biz but I have a problem. I can’t think of a way to provide proper sales support to my clients, BY PHONE.
I can’t afford to rent an office and hire a full-time OR a part-time sales person to answer the calls. I myself am NOT a very good sales person when talking on the phone AND, even india outsoucing option is a over the budget for me.
Was thinking about scheduling call-back services for clients and hire someone to do the calls HOWEVER, different clients have different “preferred time for calling”.
Is there any smart way to get around this? WIll I lose clients if I don’t provide phone sales support? Do I have any other options?
admin answers:
Hi,
I understand your problems, and I’m glad to say you have a few really good and cheap options:
1) Interns. College aged students can work with you for usually as low as 15 hours a week, and provide you a free workforce. It requires you train them like you would to most employees, but it’s free of cost.
2) Outsource. Find some cheap foreigners who are looking for work and pay them much less than the US minimum wage. Post your job offering on sites that provide jobs to these foreign countries
Best of luck! Feel free to contact me if you need extra help.
