Getting braces, very worried
?
You’ve probably heard all this before but I’m getting braces very soon and am really worried. I have some questions and would really appreciate it if they could be answered (please tell me the truth, because I want to be totally prepared for getting them, so if something hurts, please say that it does!)
1. Well I have three appointments, about a week apart, the first one starting on Monday, so does that mean they’ll put my braces on in steps? I’ve had all the x rays and moulds done, had six teeth out, and now am at the point that they’re actually ready to put the braces on. My friend said that they take photos and put rubber bands on the back of your teeth in the first appointment? please tell me more, and what happens in the others?
2. How long does it take to put on braces, because I have been looking it up, and some yahooers say it took 15 minutes and others say it took like 3 hours?
3. Ooft, those things that hold your cheeks apart while your having your braces put on looks painful as heck! i think they’re called cheek retractors or something. Is it painful/uncomfortable? That is the thing that I’m most worried about – i only got a teeny mouth lol
4. Please could you tell me the WHOLE procedure of getting braces, every little thing.
5. And is there anything painful about getting braces, anything at all?
6. Does anything go very far back into the mouth, cos Im not good with pain or anything like that, I hated when he shoved the mould things in me mouth?
Sorry i’ve asked for so much, it’s just my ortho is a really cold man, won’t tell me a thing, and my parents say that it is too late for me to change (understandably). He is also not at all gentle, just shoves his fingers in my mouth without telling or warning me, hes really horrible.
so if those questions cud be answered I’d be really appreciative (have i already sed that?)
thanks very much

1. If you have three appointments, then yes, you’ll probably be having your braces put on in steps. These vary for everyone, so I can’t say for definite what will happen at each one, but you’ll probably have some spacers (the rubber bands your friends is talking about) at the first appointment if you need those. Then at the second and third appointments they’ll attach the brackets and wires to your teeth. Sometimes they put all the brackets on at one appointment, followed by the wires at the next. Other times they put the top braces on at one appointment and the bottom braces at the next.
2. Mine took about an hour to put on as far as I remember, and that was for the brackets and wires for both top and bottom (I had all mine put on during on appointment). It will depend on what’s happening during each step, but I’d say it will probably take about 30 minutes per appointment. Take a music player along if you think you’ll get bored.
3. Don’t worry, they look painful but really aren’t. You’ll be fine, even if you do have a small mouth.
4. Well, first of all they’ll probably clean your teeth thoroughly, and then put the cheek retractors and a suction device in. Then they’ll dry each tooth and apply each individual bracket, using cement which will be hardened with a Blue Light. Then the wires are attached using little coloured elastic bands (you’ll get to choose what colours you want). Finally, the wires will be trimmed at the back, and you’re done!
5. You won’t feel any pain at all while you’re having them put on. A few hours after they attach the wires though, your mouth will probably start to ache and your teeth will feel tight. Usually the pain only lasts for a few days while your mouth is getting used to the braces. If it’s really bad just take some painkillers and eat soft foods for a few days. Sometimes the brackets and wires rub your gums and make them a bit sore. If that happens just apply some wax to the area of the brace that’s causing the trouble until your gums are better.
6. They put brackets on some of your back teeth, but you should be fine as they don’t go as far back as when you have impressions taken. I hated having impressions too as it made me gag a lot, but I was fine having the actual braces put on.
Best of luck, and try not to worry too much, you’ll be fine and will have lovely teeth at the end

Braces [20 characters]?
Please can you give me the full process of getting braces on. Im getting quite scared and im not getting them on until Thursday.
Does it hurt more or less than the seperators?
This might sound stupid but im soo scared of the cheek retractors (ive got a split corner of my lip from getting my teeth taken out) Will this hurt?
Thanx
P.s :- What colour bands should I get. I am a 14year old girl, dark brown hair and blue eyes. What colour would make your teeth look whiter?
What teeth will they put the brackets on. I know which ones for the top teeth but the same bottom ones, ive had removed so which one will they use ?

The spacers caused my mouth and teeth to be very tender. To me the spacers and first few days hurts the most. However its totally worth any minor pain your going to have a beautiful smile when its all said and done. Red bands will always make your teeth look whiter. I had red or pink bands probably 80 percent of the time then sometimes a light gray. A bright yellow is pretty too! I never mixed colors or wore really dark colors NO black dark blue or dark purple. When I had braces I had brackets on every tooth.

Getting my braces off, what do they do?
Hi, I’m getting my braces off (hooray) but I have some questions:
1. What do they do to get them off?
2. How long does it take?
3. Does it hurt?
4. Do they use them cheek retractor things, cos wen they put my braces on I had some sort of
reaction to them?
5. What else do they do in the appointment? Do they take x-rays/photos or do any more moulds?
Really excited but really scared, so if anyone could answer any of these I would be v. grateful

Im getting mine off soon too!!!! <3 i think i know how to answer them though x
1. They use clampers, you hear a POP! Theyre off!! Then scrape off any glue left
2. I'd say about 5 mins for top and then 5 mins for bottom
3. Probably a little bit of pain
4. I HATE them things.. If its the things that they put in to get a better view of your teeth then yes but you can talk to your ortho about that ![]()
5. Mine take pics before and after to see the difference in each patient and i guess they use your other mould they used for your braces but i HATE getting the mould done cause they shove the gooey stuff down your throat,, ahh xxx
Good Luck xxx

The WHOLE process of braces!!!!! Help !!!!!!!!!!!?
I’m getting braces soon and they said I won’t need to have any teeth removed (phew!). So without any tooth removal, are there any shots/injected anesthetics they need to give you?
And what do spacers feel like besides the fact that they feel like a piece of food between your teeth? Do they feel like someone just pulling your tooth or more pain than that? Please describe!
I had no idea there was a part where they open up your mouth with one of those cheek retractor things!!! It looks painful! Please tell me what it is and how they get it on there? And what does it feel like?
Everyone I know has said that after braces, they either hated the orthodontist or felt bad for the next person getting braces. Is it really that bad?
I have an instinctive fear of needles! Even if I want to cooperate and try to be brave, my body just panics and backs away. I think I inherited the fear from somewhere. Are there any tips to successfully get your mind away from that thought besides thinking of something special later on? Because I tried that and it wasn’t enough distraction.
Do you think they will let me bring in my iPod to listen to so I can focus on something else?
HELP!

Spacers are just little rubber bands that they put in between you’re teeth so that they can make space for the brackets they put on later. While they’re getting put on, you’ll feel a little pressure but nothing else. They’ll hurt for the first couple of days and you might want to take some Motrin or Tylenol for the pain. I had to live off of oatmeal for breakfast and soup for lunch and dinner. They’ll put those in about a few weeks before you’re braces.
Now, once you go in for your braces, they’ll first take out your spacers. Then, they’ll clean you’re teeth to make sure they don’t leave plaque on it. After that they will take little metal rings and place it around your back teeth. This is what the spacers are for: to make space for those brackets. You’ll feel pressure on your teeth but nothing else. They may have to try a few times to get the right size bracket for your teeth. After that they’ll put on you train tracks! They’re little metal squares that they glue onto you’re teeth. Doesn’t hurt a bit, I promise. They’ll use a little blue light to make the glue dry. Then they take a little metal wire and string it through the boxes on your teeth. Now the fun part. You get to chose the color of your rubber bands that go on the metal things on your teeth. And you’re done. The after effects of the braces is the same as the spacers. Tylenol and soft food for the next two days.
After you get them, you’ll have to go in to your orthodontist every 6 weeks to tighten your braces, change rubber bands, replace wires, etc. If anything falls out, you’ll have to go and get that looked at. You can’t eat anything gooey or sticky. Try to stay away from sugar. What’ll wind up happening is that you’re teeth will turn yellow, but the places where the brackets are will stay as white dots when you get your braces off. That won’t come off, so no sugar. Meat off of the bones, and eat with your back teeth. Cut all of your food into small pieces. Fruit is okay as long as it’s in pieces and you chew with your back teeth.
Brush your gums a lot or they’ll swell up and that is not good at all. Bruch your teeth at least twice a day for 3 minutes each. Mouth wash is important. They’ll give you a little brush to clean in between your teeth and your braces, too. They’ll also give you strips of wax. If your braces cut the inside of your lip (chances are they will) you roll up the wax onto what is cutting you).
They’ll definitely let you bring your iPod. I did that too! And don’t worry, they’ll hurt when you get them on, but you won’t regret them when you’re teeth are beautiful. Braces aren’t that bad. You just have to keep extra care of your teeth (more than usual). You’ll be fine, I promise.
Good luck, and if you have questions you can email me. You’ll do great!
