What is Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash? Does it Help Bad Breath?
Frequently people ask me if they can get rid of bad breath by using hydrogen peroxide mouthwash.
Here’s the low down:
You can’t buy the purest form of hydrogen peroxide (H202). In actual fact, the brown bottles you purchase at the pharmacy are really only 3% hydrogen peroxide – the remainder is water. The reason it is stored in brown bottles is because H202 will break down quickly when exposed to light. The brown bottle protects the ingredients from the damaging light.
While it is true that what you are buying is watered down, the commercial 3% solution is strong enough to contain the necessary anti-bacterial qualities.
Many physicians and dentists prescribe hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash for a variety of ailments. What kind? H202 is the treatment prescribed for mouth infections such as trench mouth, canker sores, mouth abrasions, and other infections and problems in the mouth.
In order to give both sides of the facts, however, some studies indicate that excessive use (holding it in the mouth for long periods of time) may soften tooth surfaces. So if you make it a practice to keep hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for long periods, say 10 to 15 minutes (some think this will whiten their teeth) – it would be a very good idea to ask your dentist. He or she will be able to let you know if there are any dangers to this.
Is it difficult to make hydrogen peroxide mouthwash?
Not at all. Just start by pouring into a glass an ounce or two, and then mix it with an equal portion of water. This can then be gargled and swished around in your mouth for no more than two minutes. Be certain that you do not swallow. Just follow the directions on the label if you questions remain.
That’s all there is to it.
You now have an all natural, safe and effective mouthwash that will, when used daily, aid in controlling bad breath in a wide variety people – but not every person!
