Many are choosing Professional Teeth whitening, having it done by their dentist, as the best possible option. This is more expensive but guarantees a safe, fast and expertly done process that will result in evenly done White Teeth.

The process is done faster by a dentist; who can whiten your Teeth Using a process that takes forty five minutes to complete. This process is done in three fifteen minute sessions. By the end of the forty five minutes the dentist will have whitened their patient’s teeth by eight to ten shades. Depending on how stained the patient’s teeth are this will be a substantial improvement. These benefits and more are what a patient gets by getting their treatment at their dentist’s office.

The dentist will use a gel that is put on the patient’s teeth. There is protection provided to the gums and lips so that the gel will not adversely affect them. As well, unlike the at home kits that can be used, if a person has the treatment done in the dentist’s office they will see results immediately. When they leave the dentist’s office their teeth will be whiter. At home kits take days and sometimes even weeks to complete the treatment process and so show their results slowly.

Mark asks…

what’s my best option? laser whitening or crown?

I hate my teeth. They’re yellow, and horrible. I didn’t really take care of them when i was a kid and i’m paying for it now with my happiness. I cant smile or laugh in front of my friends cause im embarrassed.

I’ve just turned 16. Last year one of my front teeth required a root canal. After which i had the tooth internally bleached, patching up the grey colour and returning it to my natural. Although, the tooth is slightly darker but not noticeable unless you inspect them close up.

Due to my lack of confidence, i want to try to better the look of my teeth. The colour is my only concern. They’re yellow, and horrid. I thought about laser whitening. I’ve saved up for a while now, as ive had my heart pretty much set on it but i’m unsure what would become of my front tooth that’s had the root canal.

If i got laser whitening, would it whiten?
Or would i need to get a crown?
I’m still at school, and dint have a part time job as yet so if i would need a crown, how much would it cost, and would the NHS pay towards it, or because it’s cosmetic, would i have to pay?

Thanks in advance :)

I am a practicing Dental Hygienist of 6 years.

I am sorry you had this trouble and I am afraid that it will continue to plague you throughout your life.

Tooth color is a touchy thing. Even if your teeth are Crazy Canary Yellow they will look much better if they are all the SAME SHADE of this color.

The short version of my technical answer is this: A crown may be $1000. You will want a dentist that will not hesitate to do a “Chairside Resin restoration” (like a vaneer, a fake-front on the tooth that gives it whatever color you choose) or a crown. I might lean toward the crown because it will take care of the color issue as well as any tooth-weakening that may happen due to the tooth’s Root Canal. When the canal is refilled with dental material this cuts off the tooth’s supply of nutrients, often weakening the tooth over time. A crown will make this tooth stronger.

I hope this helps.

Ken asks…

dentist in a week!! pls help with whitening?

ok, ive got the dentist a week today for a check up cos ive not been in so long and heres my teething problems!!

1. I would like my teeth whitened, what is the best way? laser? whitening kit? caps?

2. I would like the fillings that are gray and visable when i smile, to be white and the same colour as my (to be) whitened teeth. I have never had a white filling before, so i just need advice! if they are no good is there an alternative?

3. I have a crown, and when i get my teeth whitened, this will be a different colour wont it? so will i need it replaced?

4. I have an appointment next week with NHS dentist, who also do private. which is better? NHS or private, and what is the difference?

5. I am aware that this may cost some money for the treatment i want, however I do not want ripped off so any advise would be really appreciated.

Thank you so much!!

Ok, I’ll do my best to answer you, but it is difficult to know exactly what you need as I haven’t seen your teeth, but here goes.
1. The least invasive way of Whitening Teeth is to have them whitened. This involves a gel being put onto your teeth, which will change the colour of the dentine inside, making them whiter. You can have fast (in surgery) whitening or home whitening, or a combination of both. Generally the home whitening will take longer but cost less. The costs will depend on your dentist, but however it is done the end result will be the same.
2. White fillings are not available on back teeth on the NHS, and are more costly than metal ones usually. Also they do not necessarily last as long, although as ever this is variable as it depends on the dentist and their technique, as well as the patient and their cleaning and sugar intake. If I were you I would only have white fillings put in as replacements to fillings which NEED to be done, so eventually your teeth will be less metallic, without you having to have a lot of unnecessary work done and spending lots of money. But that’s my view, and there are plenty who will disagree with me……
3. An old crown will not whiten, so If the crown matches your teeth now, you would need a new one after.
4. The dentist is the same whether NHS or private, but the time and materials available to them are better privately.

Good luck.
