Why Teeth Whitening? Enamel Examined
Discoloured teeth can be an ugly feature of a person and no one would want to be known for that. Stained teeth are very common and with our poor diet and lifestyle, it is very much expected to occur. Medication and ageing is also a contributing factor. Some people naturally have yellow teeth although many see yellow teeth as stronger than White Teeth. It isn’t pleasing to have yellow teeth though, because white teeth indicate health and are easy on the eyes. Humans only have one set of teeth so good to care is needed and for those with yellow teeth, that bright and healthy smile can be achieved with various methods today.
Stains on teeth such as those caused by food can almost always be removed through clinical dental cleaning but deeper stains can only be removed by teeth whitening. Many options to do so are available such as toothpastes, gels, strips, Tooth Whitening pens etc. There are even natural remedies such as rubbing strawberries onto your teeth and gargling with apple cider vinegar to whiten your teeth. But the most effective and possibly cheapest way is professional teeth whitening.
Professional teeth whitening by a dentist is done by making sure your teeth and gums are suitable for the procedure and if so, a rubber shield or gel is applied over the gums for protection. The hydrogen peroxide or the more common Carbamide Peroxide gel is then applied to the Teeth Using a special mouth tray that conforms to an individual’s mouth shape. The process is then accelerated using a blue laser light. Oxygen enters the teeth enamel and lightens the teeth colour as the peroxide breaks down. The teeth colour is not completely changed and only natural teeth are suitable for this procedure. Other dental restorative work including crowns, caps and veneers will not be lightened and they require replacements or special cleaning. The whiteness can be prolonged using special whitening toothpastes and gels. Results lasts for about 2 years depending on your diet but you can refer to your dentist for advice.
