Faqs About Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene includes a lot of areas such as cleaning the teeth, wisdom teeth, bad breath, x-rays, exams, applying fluoride for teeth whitening and many other services. Here are a few frequently asked questions about dental hygiene.

Qs.1 What are wisdom teeth?

Ans: Your third molars are commonly called “wisdom teeth” and they are the last to emerge and generally tend to come through between the age 17 and 25. For some people they don’t even notice the eruption of the teeth, but for some it is a rather painful procedure. It is advisable that you get these teeth extracted or removed as early as possible as the trouble that they can cause cannot be predicted.

Qs.2 If a tooth is knocked out, how soon after should I see a dentist?

Ans: If the knocked out tooth is dirty then hold it by the crown and not the roots and then rinse it in milk. If milk is unavailable at that point then use water, but only for a few seconds. You could alternatively ask the patient to suck it clean and then place the tooth back in the socket carefully in the correct position. If the tooth cannot be replanted by you, then wrap it in a wrap, place it in milk or then place it in the patient’s mouth inside the cheek. It is crucial that you visit the dentist within 30 minutes as only then successful replanting can occur.

Qs.3 I brush regularly, why do I still have bad breath?

Ans: When food particles gets accumulated on your tongue or in between your teeth and they are not removed during your daily oral cleaning then this reacts with the bacteria and causes bad breath. Some people have trouble with bad breath all the time and using mints or mouthwash or even gum will not solve the problem, but will only mask it.

What needs to be done is to adopt a healthy oral hygiene routine and you should schedule regular cleaning appointments to remove plaque and tartar buildup every 6 to 12 months depending upon the current state of oral health. After sometimes you can restore your mouth to full health and have fresh breath.

Qs.4 What is root canal treatment?

Ans: When the pulp of the tooth becomes diseased or is injured then it is unable to repair its self and thus becomes infected. If this is left untreated then it dies and becomes necrotic which forms an abscess which can destroy the bone that surrounds the tooth root. A root canal treatment is the removal of this diseased pulp which then allows the body’s defense system to repair the damage caused by the infection.

Qs.5 Will whitening harm my gums and teeth?

Ans: No, teeth whitening does not adversely affect your teeth or gums and it has been researched for many years now.
