Stinkbugs: A Prejudice?
Stinkbugs: A Prejudice?
Butterflies. Ah, what image does that invoke? A field of daisies… Picnicking in the woods… Most Disney movies. How about lady bugs? Tomatoes, gardening, adorable little spotted creatures… How about Stinkbugs? Yech! Stinkbugs, how could anyone like them? I mean, they obviously stink, don’t they?!
No, they don’t. Here is a prime example of how a name can and will affect a person’s view of what something might be. Imagine there’s a person who has never seen these three bugs before, and you told them their names and asked them what their first thought was, based on what the name sounded like. It would probably be something like this: The butterfly? Carefree, buttercups. The ladybug? Cute, dainty. The stinkbug? Ewwwwwwwwwww. Now let’s imagine that the stinkbug was given a different name- say, the rose-bug, or the daisy-bug or something else equally poetic and fantasy inducing. Wouldn’t you think of it differently?
I should know. For my entire toddlerhood and most of my childhood, I knew of this bug as a Sabbath bug. Don’t ask why, but when I asked what it was, my mother told me it was a Sabbath bug. And that’s what our family still calls it. Now, the Sabbath for me invokes wonderful memories- the family together, the kitchen windows fogging up in winter while the food cooked, everyone having a good time, and the name Sabbath itself gives you a vision of peace, calm, tranquility of body and mind… I’ll be perfectly honest, I love that bug. Because the name, for me, reminds me of such great times, how couldn’t I like them.
Let’s have an in depth look at this creature for a moment
We’ll start with the name. The reason that whoever named it, called it a stinkbug is probably because he stepped on it. Long story short, when a stinkbug is stepped on it emits a liquid-y substance whose stench has been said to smell like old socks, rotting garbage, smelly rubber, and other various and sundry decaying paraphernalia. So he got upset, probably said a few choice words and then something like, “I hate you, you….you stinkbug!!” The name caught on, and so now we all know this poor creature as a stinkbug. The truth is though, there are some bugs that die in much worse ways. For instance, to kill a slug, you pour salt on it. While as a child, its death process may be fascinating, it’s really rather gross. For those who don’t know what happens, allow me to enlighten you- it melts. For a smell, you use a little air freshener, a vacuum for the bug itself, and you’d never know it was there. How about a slug puddle? You have to get down and scrub, while trying to ignore a persistent gagging reflex.
How about the sensory perception of the stinkbug?
It’s either brown or green, with a shield shaped shell. They’re fairly small, with the largest ones in the US measuring at less than an inch long (the massive ones are found in Asia). Not the prettiest bug there is, but it’s far from the ugliest (the centipede, anyone?). When it takes off, it sounds like a helicopter, which can startle you and probably will annoy you. On an everyday basis, it doesn’t really smell like anything- the only exception to that being the one mentioned above- and it has a hard shell, so if you do end up stepping on it, not to get too graphic, but in addition to the smell, you will feel a slight crunch. Lastly, I’m afraid that I don’t know what it tastes like.
Now we’ll do pros and cons:
The good news is, in the summer it’ll eat a lot of garden pests. The bad news is, in the winter it’ll come in through the cracks of your house looking for warmth. Not eat your house, or your food, or your clothes, but enjoy some warmth. It’s like a guest that expects nothing, and only needs your air to be comfortable. And yet, despite all this, if you Google the word stinkbug, you’ll get pages and pages of information on how to ‘rid yourself of the voracious pests’. It almost makes me wonder if the pest control companies got together and decided to give the stinkbug it’s bad reputation so they could sell all that stinkbug purger. Again, the good news is, it won’t do anything to you; the bad news is, it’s ugly, it sounds like a helicopter when it flies, and it’s larger than your average bug, so when you first notice it, you have to hold back your shriek instinct. My, my, what a nuisance…
Let’s be honest with ourselves: Stinkbugs aren’t all that bad
On the bug scale they’re quite charming actually. They’re generally not a house or garden pest, They’re not that ugly, they’re only noisy when they fly, and the only time they’re really disturbing is when you open your umbrella and a whole congregation of them flies out. Oh, but wait a second, it’s disturbing when any bug is found in big groups- like ant wars on the sidewalk, or moths in a rug. They only kill other bugs when they’re hungry, which is more than can be said for humans who are disturbing each other all the time, and we can even learn from them: Like many bugs, they work much harder than the average human being. So, if they were called the bubby-bug, or the daisy-bug, do you think we’d still hate them? Well, there may be some gentle ways to keep them out of your home.
