Top Five Dangers of Teeth Whitening Kits
Advertisements for teeth whitening are everywhere–from over-the-counter Teeth Whitening Kits to dentist prescribed solutions. They lead you to believe that without a perfect white smile, you will be a social outcast left to drink your coffee and red wine alone. So we’ve become obsessed with movie star White Teeth and will go to any extent to get them.
We want the big white smile so badly that we ignore the little voice inside of us that warns us that maybe exposing our teeth to a bleaching chemical for several hours may not be the best thing for our oral and overall health.
So why not use teeth whitening kits?
- Bleach is the strongest oxidant in the world. It is unlikely you can keep the bleach from being absorbed into your digestive system and your blood stream. These bleaches break down into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We strive to combat free radicals to fight disease and yet we intentionally introduce O2 radicals into our bodies with Teeth Whitening Bleach.
- The cosmetic effects of bleaching are not permanent. Many people find that if they stop bleaching, their teeth eventually regress to a shade worse than it was before they started because the bleach makes our enamel more porous. Not healthy for you, but the bleaching cycle sells more teeth whitening kits and services.
- Some people report a throbbing in their teeth for several days after bleaching. This could indicate that the bleach has penetrated into exposed dentin or a crack in the enamel to irritate the pulp. This is a serious condition that could lead to the narrowing of the pulp chamber and the canal often leading to the need for a root canal years later.
- You need to avoid liquids that stain your teeth. Many bleach advocates encourage users to drink all staining beverages (red wine, coffee, tea, etc.) through a straw to prevent an accelerated relapse in staining.
- The whitening becomes addictive in nature. Teeth Bleaching leads to continual use in order to maintain a particular whiteness. Over time this has an accumulative effect and can wreak havoc on oral and overall health. Gums become increasingly irritated, teeth become decalcified and take on a translucent, bluish hue.
In most cases, teeth bleaching is an elective process for cosmetic purposes only. You have to ask yourself if you are willing to risk your oral and overall health if you embark on the treatments.
This question may be easier to answer when presented with another alternative. There are more natural teeth whitening options available to you that mankind has used for ages to get beautiful teeth. These are beginning to make a resurgence for several reasons-they eliminate the harmful effects of teeth bleaching, they are significantly cheaper, and they work.
