The process of teeth whitening Birmingham
There is a vast array of Teeth Whitening Treatments available on the market ranging from at-home over the counter (OTC) DIY kits to professional teeth whitening birmingham treatments which can be carried out by your dental practitioner or cosmetic dentist.
Teeth staining can be caused by a number of different factors. Teeth staining food and drink are the most common causes, as well as tobacco, however some medications and genetic causes can also cause discolouration.
Some toothpastes available in stores promise teeth whitening effects, but this is not entirely true. These pastes contain an abrasive which will polish the teeth, but they do not contain the same chemicals used in bleaching treatments. The main problem with these pastes is that some contain pumice, which if used on a regular basis can cause some problems such as the wearing away of the tooth enamel and gums receding. Baking soda is generally considered a safer and gentler option, as it is less abrasive on the teeth and gums.
The process of Laser Teeth Whitening is usually carried out using a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide, which when applied to the teeth penetrates the porous enamel to treat the underlying dentin. The enamel, the top layer of the tooth is not actually the part which is stained but a porous, clear layer. It is in fact the dentin underneath which is stained. When a bleaching solution is applied to the teeth, this makes the dentin appear lighter.
While these products can be highly effective, they can become subject to overuse, resulting in further discolouration of teeth, even turning them a translucent grey or blue colour. This is seen more and more often in what dental professionals are dubbing “bleachorexics”, those who undergo repeated teeth whitening treatments in pursuit of an unattainable level of brightness. The truth is that everyone’s teeth are different levels of an off-white colour, but you probably would not be able to guess this from the various pictures in places such as magazines where the images are re-touched, or from celebrities’ teeth where veneers have been fitted to give a “perfectly straight, perfectly white” appearance. It may indeed be the case that teeth whitening is necessary, for example if the teeth have become discoloured through use of some form of medication.
Our teeth have an important impact on us, physically and psychologically. Smiling is a natural mood booster which follows a chain reaction of sorts –if we are happy, we smile, which makes us feel good. If we cannot smile because we are unhappy with the appearance of our teeth, this can be a deeply affecting problem linked not just to matters of aesthetics, but also to identity and our personal mood.
