Corrections to get Fantastic Portraits

The three most important areas when retouching a photograph are going to be the eyes, the teeth, and the neck. Do it right, and you can make the person look great. I am going to show you the problems, and what you can do to correct them. Subtle changes can sometimes solve many problems.

Lighting from above can cause the eyes to darken in the shadows. If the light is in front, the eyes will look the best. If the light comes from the side, the other eye will fall into darkness. Manually lightening the eyes is the answer, but don’t do it too much. The change needs to be subtle. Just try and make it look natural. Be careful not to over whiten, it’s easy to go too far. Please watch the Photoshop CS5 Tutorial about Whitening Eyes. In the video, we will go into more detail about the techniques we use.

The area that makes a big difference is the teeth. Discolored and crooked teeth can really cause some issues. If someone drinks coffe or smokes, they will have a yellow tint to them. Perhaps the picture was taken in a green room, where the setting itself has a particular cast to it. Sometimes the teeth may look pink as a reflection off the lips. Hard lighting can cause darks between the teeth. The result there will cause the viewers attention to be drawn into the mouth. These things can cause attention to be drawn into the mouth.Things like these can cause attention to be drawn towards the teeth. What you need to do is to give the teeth a balance, that gives it a more natural, cooler look of white with a slight tint of blue. Whitening the teeth will also give the lips a warm, inviting look. Another enhancement, would be to fix the teeth with photo retouching. If your interested, the Photoshop Tutorial How to Whiten Teeth, can be most helpful.

A person’s jowels are an area to watch out for. People have a tendency to dip their head down, this can cause a shadow under the chin. With overhead lighting, this can often happen. Professional photographers will often have the person rotate their body so that they will appear thinner. Unfortunately, that will further cause creases in the neck that look like ripples. This can actually be some of the hardest retouching to do. What the photographer should have the subject to do, is to actually stick their chin straight out and move their head forward. You would not see the person extending the head forward, instead, it would remove the double chin. You will however, see a decrease in shadow cast under the jowls of the chin, as well as loose some additional weight from the skin being stretched. Editing the jowls is complicated, as there is light and dark in the gradient of the skin. A gradient is the hardest thing to fix without completely recreating the whole thing. When retouching the jowls, you’re moving the texture around, and that’s something that causes the editing to look fake. Sometimes you are moving up the collar, or lowering the head, or doing other excessive work. You can watch this video on Retouching the Neck to see how to handle it.
